Circular economy and environmental health in low- and middle-income countries Wright, CY; Godfrey, Linda K; Armiento, G; Haywood, Lorren K; Inglesi-Lotz, R; Lyne, K; Nayna Schwerdtle, P The circular economy framework for human production and consumption is an alternative to the traditional, linear concept of ‘take, make, and dispose’. Circular economy (CE) principles comprise of ‘design out waste and pollution’, ‘retain products and materials in use’, and ‘regenerate natural systems’. This commentary considers the risks and opportunities of the CE for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), acknowledging that LMICs must identify their own opportunities, while recognising the potential positive and negative environmental health impacts. Assessment of changes in concentrations of selected criteria pollutants in the Vaal and Highveld priority areas (Journal article) Feig, Gregor T; Garland, Rebecca M; Naidoo, Seneca; Maluleke, Amukelani; Van der Merwe, Marna R Ambient air pollution has important impacts on a variety of environmental issues, particularly on human health and ecosystem processes. A key tool for understanding the impacts of atmospheric pollution is through the long term measurement of the ambient concentrations of criteria atmospheric pollutants. Monitoring of ambient pollution concentrations has been conducted in the National Air Quality Priority areas since 2009. During this time period, significant changes in the management of air pollution have occurred, including the adoption of the ambient air quality standards, and the implementation of section 21 emission standards. This paper examines the long term evolution of ambient concentrations for PM, SO2 in the Vaal Triangle Airshed Priority Area 2007-2017 and Highveld Priority Area. These trends will be evaluated against the implementation of management interventions and highlight the variation in the measured concentrations and emerging areas of concern. Impact of COVID-19 on food waste globally and in South Africa. Oelofse, Suzanna HH This presentation focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on food waste globally and in South Africa. In South Africa, effects of food wastes resulted in the increase of inefficiencies in the movement of food produce, as well as citrus exports to Asia that was impacted negatively by the container issue at ports. Evaluating scenarios toward zero plastic pollution Lau, WWY; Shiran, J; Bailey, RM; Cook, E; Stuchtey, MR; Koskella, J; Velis, CA; Boucher, J; Murphy, MB; Godfrey, Linda K Plastic pollution is a pervasive and growing problem. To estimate the effectiveness of interventions to reduce plastic pollution, we modeled stocks and flows of municipal solid waste and four sources of microplastics through the global plastic system for five scenarios between 2016 and 2040. Implementing all feasible interventions reduced plastic pollution by 40% from 2016 rates and 78% relative to ‘business as usual’ in 2040. Even with immediate and concerted action, 710 million metric tons of plastic waste cumulatively entered aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. To avoid a massive build-up of plastic in the environment, coordinated global action is urgently needed to reduce plastic consumption, increase rates of reuse, waste collection and recycling, expand safe disposal systems and accelerate innovation in the plastic value chain.
